Aruba Hope Rocks

Aruba Hope Rocks

Remember, 2008, is an exploration of rock formations found on the island of Aruba. These formations, two to four feet high, are made by tourists and consist of a layering of volcanic and sedimentary rock. The formations are located by the sea in a desert terrain within a national park. Visitors from around the world walk this shoreline and build these rock pillars of "hope". The vast quantity of these rock monuments, and the public's response to them, are reminiscent of a religious ritual or experience. I find myself making comparisons of the building of these constructions by tourists, to the religious act of lighting a candle in a church.
